LCSS (London Centre for Social Studies) has been the host to a very special exhibtion.The First Art of Tezhib( illumination or gilding) Exhibition in London has taken place at LCSS building.
Tezhib is an Arabic word which derives from "zeheb (gold)" and means "ornamenting with gold". It is an important part of Ottoman Book Art and comes together with "hat (calligraphy)". The content of the calligraphy was either religious texts or poems or proverbs to be chosen by the illuminators and these plates are called "levha".
After the opening ceremony given at LCSS building, Dr Karadas has shared with us his knowledge and experience of the "Turkish Art of Illumination" since 16th century. He has showed some examples of "levha" consisting of Turkish Art of Illumination. The opening ceremony of the exhibition was organised on 25 June 2004 and the exhibition has welcomed everyone interested in the Art of Illumination for a week till 2 July 2004.
