In the mid-sixties, the introduction of the container in international shipping had a huge impact on international trade, as the volume of trade in products grew more than twice as fast as the volume of global production, and two and a half times faster than global economic output. Transportation and trade? are indispensable of one another and certainly dependant upon each other. Sea born trade being the artery of international trade is crucial for the global economy.What is the quantifiable impact of shipping on the global economy and on our daily lives? How is such an important pillar of the global economy maintained? Is international shipping a green mode of transport? The answers to these questions and many more will be addressed through the discussion.
Biography: Capt Dr B Sitki Ustaoglu is a master mariner currently representing Turkey at the International Maritime Organization as the Alternate Permanent Representative. He was assistant professor at the Maritime Faculty of Istanbul Technical University until 2003 and the deputy under-secretary at the Turkish Maritime Administration (Undersecretariat for Maritime Affairs) from early 2003 to mid 2006 before taking up his position based in London. His MSc is on maritime business and his PhD is on maritime policies, both from Istanbul University. During his academic studies he has been to the UK, USA and Japan for his research and has travelled to the Netherlands, Japan, Poland and UK for some of his technical training.

This seminar is organised by the London Centre for Social Studies (LCSS) and LSE Turkish Society. It is the first of the LCSS 2008/2009 seminar series. LCSS is a registered charity that seeks to undertake, encourage, sponsor and contribute towards academic research, work and publication in the UK, findings of which will be of direct relevance and value to academia, charitable organisations, service-providing institutions and governmental and non-governmental bodies.
