More than just a headscarf in Europe: Financial Liberalisation and Economic Development in Turkey

gulnur_muradoglu_croppedThe financial liberalisation process of Turkey will be discussed in an international context with reference to its past and future. Turkey has been going through a Financial Liberalisation Process for about three decades now. The Turkish liberalisation process similar to its international counterparts has been in cycles of high growth followed by financial crises. The economic system the Turkish Republic inherited from the Ottoman Empire will be discussed as the basis of the financial and economic processes Turkey has adopted. The financial liberalisation experiences of emerging markets will be discussed as the environment which Turkish financial markets and economic agents are operating now. The European Union and Turkey's accession talks will be evaluated in terms of their financial and economic impacts for both Turkey and Europe.

Biography: Gulnur Muradoglu is a Professor of finance at Cass Business School of City University in London. She is currently working as the Director of PhD Programme. She has worked for Manchester School of Accounting and Finance as the Director of the MSc. Finance Program and for Bilkent University as assistant and associate professor respectively. She has been at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania as a Fulbrighter and Warwick Business School as a Visiting Fellow. She has been on the Editorial Boards of the journals Comparative Economic Systems, Finance Letters and Emerging Markets Finance and Trade. She has organised and chaired the 11th Multinational Finance Society Meeting in Istanbul in 2004 and she will be organising and chairing the EWGFM Conference to be held in London in 2008. She is currently doing research on behavioural finance, and emerging markets. She has published more than thirty articles in various journals including The Journal of Behavioural Finance, Journal of Economics and Business, Journal of International Business, European Journal of Finance, Multinational Finance Journal, Applied Financial Economics, Developing Economies, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of Forecasting, International Journal of Forecasting, Applied Economics Letters and Emerging Markets Finance and Trade.
